The Psychedelic Furs are one of Britain’s most prominent new wave bands. The band emerged from London in 1977 when the Butler brothers, Richard and Tim, recruited members Duncan Kilburn, Paul Wilson, and Roger Morris members. Together, they formed what will be one of the most celebrated and long-running new wave bands from the U.K. The Furs released their debut single, “We Love You,” in 1979. The single, which made a slight breakthrough on Billboard’s Dance chart, is featured in the band’s self-titled debut album. The following year, they dropped two more songs from the record, “Sister Europe” and “Mr. Jones.” The self-titled debut performed moderately well on the U.K. chart, peaking at number 18.
By 1982, the band made their phenomenal international breakthrough when they released their third album, Forever Now. The effort peaked at number 61 in the U.S. and number 20 in the U.K. The album, which spawned “Love My Way,” “Danger,” and “Run Run,” sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., earning a gold certification. During the ‘80s, The Psychedelic Furs continued to release critically-acclaimed albums that spawned numerous staples. In 1986, their single “Pretty in Pink” became the official theme song for the film of the same name. This made the song chart again five years after it was released.
Fellow new wave sensation Squeeze also enjoyed a stellar career during the ‘70s and ‘80s. The band made their phenomenal breakthrough in 1978 upon releasing their debut single, “Take Me, I’m Yours.” The single, which peaked at number 19 on the U.K. chart, was spawned by their self-titled debut album. The following year, Squeeze dropped their highly-successful record, Cool for Cats. The album spawned two of the band’s highest-charting singles to date. “Cool for Cats” and “Up the Junction” peaked at number 2 on the U.K. chart and were gold and silver in their country.
Over the years, Squeeze released several iconic hits, such as “Tempted,” “Labelled with Love,” “Hourglass,” and many more. Moreover, the band has also proven their incredible longevity by consistently releasing new music throughout the ‘90s and 2000s. In 2017, they dropped their latest effort, The Knowledge, which entered the U.K. chart at number 25.
