Premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival back in August 2016, La La Land is a musical romantic comedy-drama film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The film follows the tale of a struggling pianist and an aspiring actress who fall in love in the city of stars. Navigating life through their challenging career lives, it's a story that resonated with millions of people around the world. Moreover, its iconic soundtrack has become a critic and fan favorite.
Writer and Director Damien Chazelle first conceptualized the idea with soundtrack composer Justin Hurwitz back in 2010, Chazelle penned a script but had his work lying around for a while, struggling to find a studio that would finance its production without doing changes to his craft. After his film, Whiplash, became a success in 2014, Summit Entertainment picked up La La Land, and began filming in 2015.
Grossing $472 million globally with a budget of $30 million, the film became a resounding success. With massive acclaim for Chazelle's direction and screenplay, Gosling and Stone's acting, its musical numbers, choreography, and pretty much its whole production, it achieved record-breaking awards. These include seven awards at the 74th Golden Globe Awards and received eleven nominations at the 70th British Academy Film Awards where they won five. La La Land also received fourteen nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, scoring six of these.
