This is such a loaded question, and there might not be enough room in this box to talk about everything. The first thing that catches the audience's eye is the type of dancer that this company usually puts out on stage. Both men and women dancers tend to be much more physically imposing than who you'll find performing for other companies. This allows the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to put on much more varied and powerful dance numbers. Then, of course, there's the music and the colors that you see in the costumes and the set itself. Simply put, you have to be here to see the full list of things that make this experience unique.
The legendary Alvin Ailey formed this company in 1958 as a way to create his own opportunities in the dance world. He was always uncomfortable with the label of being a "black choreographer." Through his work with the company, he was able to share his true vision with the world. Ailey unfortunately left us way too soon, but his legacy lives on through some of the dance numbers that you'll be able to see on stage. The company remains true to his dance principals and his obvious willingness to give minorities a chance to perform under the bright lights.
Promoters for this show have decided not to sell pit tickets for this event. That's actually a great call because this is a show that you're going to be able to enjoy better if you can see the entire scope.
